Optical Fiber Failure Probability Predictions from Long-length Strength Distributions
نویسنده
چکیده
Strength data from a recently developed apparatus for measuring long-length fiber strength distributions are analyzed in terms of proof test theory for truncated distributions. Data are fitted using Weibull statistics and scaled for bending and tensile lengths ranging from 1 meter to 100 kilometers. Most tensile applications require strength data near the proof stress level. For failure probability levels less than lx10 most bending applications need be concerned with flaws near the proof stress level.

Effects of Fiber Length and Fiber Orientation Distributions on the Tensile Strength of Short-fiber-reinforced Polymers
This paper presents an analytical method considering the effects of fiber length and fiber orientation distributions for predicting the tensile strength (TS) of short-fiber-reinforced polymers (SFRP). Two probability density functions are used for modelling the distributions of fiber length and fiber orientation. The strength of SFRP is derived as a functiolz of fiber length and fiber orientati...
متن کاملA4.4 Reliability of Silica Fibres
The total length of silica optical fibre now installed around the world measures in the tens of Gm; the majority of it for telecommunications applications. While the fibre has proved reliable so far, with most failures being caused by external factors such as ‘dig-ups’ [1], the huge capital investment involved requires that long term reliability be treated as a serious issue. FIGURE 1 shows a W...
متن کاملFiber Length and Orientation in Long Carbon Fiber Thermoplastic Composites
Carbon fiber composites have become popular in aerospace applications because of their lightweight yet strong material properties. The injection molding process can be used to produce discontinuous fiber composites using less time and resources than traditional methods, thereby broadening carbon fiber composites’ applications in different industries. Utilization of longer fibers offers more loa...
متن کاملMechanical Behavior of Hybrid Fiber Reinforced High Strength Concrete with Graded Fibers
Brittleness, which was the inherent weakness in High Strength Concrete (HSC), can be avoided by reinforcing the concrete with discontinuous fibers. Reinforcing HSC with more than one fiber is advantageous in an overall improvement of the mechanical performance of the composite. In this experimental study, Hybrid Fiber Reinforced High Strength Concrete (HyFR-HSC) mixes were formed by blending si...
متن کاملThe Effect of Matrix Bond Failure on Stress Distribution in Short and Long Fibers of a Hybrid Composite Lamina
Abstract : The effect of a bond failure and its extent is studied on stress concentration in long fibers as well as stress distribution in short fibers and their surrounding matrix bays. The material is assumed to be a finite width hybrid composite lamina which is subjected to a tensile load of magnitude "P" at infinity. The surrounding matrix is assumed to take only shear (shear-lag theory). T...
